Three simple words. Pizza. Versus. Skeletons.
You are a pizza. You must fight skeletons, beat them in snowboard challenges, rescue puppies and then sumo wrestle giant skulls off cliffs. It is excellent.

So far there are 4 tables available, TOTAR (Tales of the Arabian Nights), Ripley’s Believe It or Not, Black Hole and Theatre of Magic. All of these are classic table and all from different manufacturers.

I believe there are 2 more tables promised soon, at least that’s what I thought I read when I immediately plugged in my 10 bucks for all tables offered (like a spastic goof). The tables are available individually for 2 bucks a piece or free to try until you get the high score.

This is definitely a package that I hope gets some major updates. The tables are not iPad quality (although the game is an asterisk title), the texture maps are low resolution.

All the elements that need to be fixed; Improved resolution, skill shots are not possible as the camera shifts to the front of the table to pull back the plunger instead of switching overhead to allow using the plunger meter markings, the dot matrix display is called a HUD and does not emulate dot matrix, the cameras force portrait mode of the IPad but the table is always angled back – if portrait mode is forced then I’d like a more top down view of the playfield.

Far Sight has some great licenses here and the physics are nice but they really need to step up the quality. To me the audience is going to be real pinball enthusiasts in which case the DMD, camera angles and Plunger elements need to be fixed or the folks who enjoy Zen Pinball in which case the graphics will need to be higher quality.

The iOS – Android developers are known to be more responsive to the public with updates and I hope this title follows suit. This is a great way to experience these tables for the first time or play them on the go and I really want it to live up to what I had expected.

Puzzle juice is a puzzle game that promises to ’punch your brain in the face’ and it kind of does, being a Tetris like, a match three game and a word game all in one. Pieces fall and you make lines or isolate like colors to turn blocks into letters to make words. Similar in its achievement driving progress structure to something like shibuya. Me like.

Recent iPhone goodie- Justin Smith’s Realistic Summer Sports Simulator, which is anything but. If you’re familiar with Smith’s previous outing Envirobear 2000, you might have an idea of what to expect- MS Paint style visuals and intentionally bad controls leading to physics based hilarity. Far better than I just made it sound.

iPhone baddie- Street Wrestling. This is a Lucha themed beat ’em up that the eagle eyed may recognize as actually being XBLA game Lucha Fury, which reviewed horrendously last summer before being pulled and picked up by chillingo. Dull beat em up, not even making much of the wrestling theme (hey, I liked the story mode in wrestlemania xix) and now with tiny hard to press virtual buttons.

iPhone middlie- Wrestling Manager, which sadly isn’t a Jimmy Hart sim, but is a booking simmulator where you spend in game cash on card packs that contain different wrestlers and gimmicks that you plug into shows. Initially too bare bones but it is steadily being updated. Bit expensive though, especially considering it tries to get you to spill more cash to buy good cards faster. I hate freemium, but this could actually be an amazing freemium game if they tweaked it a bit.

iPad owners: someone snuck a version of MAME into the app store. There is no way this will last so get it while it’s hot. Note that you’ll have to use a third party utility to actually load ROMs into the thing. Also, the ROMsets you want are for 0.37b5, not the new hotness.

    iTunes download:

20th anniversary edition of Eric chahi (from dust)’s seminal Amiga/pc adventure another world is out today. It handles surprisingly well thanks to a reengineered control system that uses taps and swipes rather than the lazy virtual dpad route. Very much of its time (it is essentially a trial and error driven memory test) but tells story through gameplay better than most modern games and creates a hell of an atmosphere.

Jetpack joyride- another endless runner sure, but halfbricks latest has some great powerups, a nice shibuya esque structure where getting game center achievements is how you advance in the game so you have to change up your playstyle all the time, the whole central conceit is that you have a jetpack that flies by the recoil of machine guns attached to the bottom for crying out loud, AND the main character is called Barry Steakfries. What’s not to like?

So…who has played the new Rally X game? Is the control really as bad as all that?

My goodness quarrel dx is good. It is risk, except it is scrabble- rather than deciding clashes via dice roll, you have to make the biggest word you can with the troops (letters) you have to capture territory. Scrabble is good, risk is also good, both together is a delight.

Playing Shadow Era. Fermium card game similar to MTG. Simple system with some good strategic depth, but it is really, really slow to earn cards for free.

Picked up DOOM while it was on sale for $2. (It may still be on sale, but I’m not sure). It’s the same game you all know and love. It’s just really weird trying to control your movement with just your thumb on the touchpad. Also, I don’t think there’s any music, and those melting screen transitions to levels aren’t in there.

Also dabbling with Gesundheit!. It’s an adorable puzzle game- and I mean squeal with delight adorable with its Eric Carle story book aesthetic and just awesome characterization. The concept centers around strategically sneezing so that monsters on the level who love eating snot are lured into booby traps where giant fish monster things eat them. Awesome.

OK, so Space Invaders Infinity Gene is one of my very favourite iphone games ever. I’m also partial to a music game here and there. Music game in the style of infinity gene by the same people? Yes please. Groovecoaster is cool, and unlike other rhythm games is played by tapping holding or scratching with one thumb, while beats appear in the environment of this gorgeous visualiser style world which means you’re actually looking at the (very nice) art the game pushes out, as opposed to rock band, say, where the graphics are super irrelevant. Downer? Even though it’s probably impossible to do and that’s why, the cool things infinity gene did with music stages had me hoping I could bring my own tracks into groovecoaster, and you can’t. But still, 85 yen for this? Great.

If anybody else remembers Epic Pinball, I recently found that they updated 3 of the tables from that game and released it as Retro Pinball for free for your iDevices. I’ve been playing the heck out of the Super Android table.

Awesome free game alert- Magnetic Billiards is designed by design legends the Pickford brothers, and is a great little puzzle game. Basic idea involves shooting coloured balls around a billiard table like space with the idea being for like colours to stick together.
The wrinkle is that rather than finishing a table in the fewest possible shots, the trick is to actually take as many shots as possible for more points without fouling a shot. SImple fun.
Also recommend Async corp- which is a charming little puzzler- in effect two match four puzzle games played simultaneously, where blocks are traded between the two game sides to create packets.

The happiest and saddest time of all time. Devil’s Crush is available for 3 bucks within Turbo GrafX Game Box http://tinyurl.com/TG-16GameBox !!! The only rub is that they show the box art for Devil Crash (the Japanese version) and also taunt me with the only changed element of that version (the spinning green pentagram in the upper level) by intermingling it with the US version screenshots!

Yay and Boo at the same time, deceit! However, it is still the best digital pin of all time.

I like the article however I think the 3DS is following right in line wit Nintendo handheld slow trickle to handheld dominance (as far as pure gaming handhelds go). Apple definitely is crushing game sales and quantities but, if you pick apart how many apps can actually be considered a full fledged game over a cookie cutter time waster, those numbers would change dramatically.

I definitely want a 3DS but, like the Advanced, the Advanced SP and the original NDS they are systems I will not jump on straight away due to price and catalog. Once a hot pack-in is included, you usually see a jump in sales. Also, the advertising of the lenticular screen has been horrible, I don’t even know how you could possibly convey it but, I don’t get payed like the brains at Nintendo. I would think if they too the layers of actual in-game gameplay and attached them to layers of a motion application and then swept the camera in an arc around the moving images it might help folks understand what’s truly going on

The current commercials show Ryu and Ballsack jumping out of the screen and flying around the gamer’s head. We’ve been seeing these types of exaggerated images since the mid 80’s to try and sell up those piece of crap VR helmets. The idea of video game elements actually flying all around us and immersing us in the games’ environment is not even a fantasy bought into by children these days.

I think Nintendo has a good product but, it may be a slow burn like their introduction of new features on their handhelds. Or, it could just flop and we’ll all be plating tilt and swipe games with iffy controls for the next few years. I love my iPad and it’s what I play the most but, it’s nice to hop on the PSP or DS every now and again and experience those type of titles with those types of familiar controls.

Super pleasantly surprised by Continuity 2- the Continuation. It’s got a super stupid name, and a non desrcript art style, but it’s one of the most creative puzzlers I’ve played in ages- tying in regular puzzle platforming with a sliding tile puzzle so you have to piece together a level for your little dude to run through and collect keys to open doors. When gravity creeps in, meaning you have to turn your device, often upside down, to change which way is up, it makes it all the more interesting. Well worth the bargain basement price.
