Ever wanted to make the Virtual Boy the success story it deserved? Or just release knock-offs of every NeoGeo title? Then Game Dev Story is for you.

A business-simulation type game (like the classic Pizza Tycoon), but you manage a Game Development Studio.

The graphics are cute, but the interface is awkward (you can tell this is a port from a japanese cellphone game). Still, it’s the most addicted game I’ve played on the iPhone in awhile and it has tons of little references to gaming culture and nerd humor that a regular WTG listener will appreciate.

Grab the Lite version and try it out so you can ignore work and family for the rest of the day.

Angry Birds and Cut the Rope, but you probably already have these.
Words for Friends is free and a must-have.
Personally I love and regularly play: Canabalt, Astronut, The Incident, Orbital, Bejeweled 2 and Plants vs Zombies.

Other games that I enjoy but are more of an investment: Street Fighter IV, Fifa 11, Carcassonne and Game Dev Story

That’s pretty much it: You can pay 25$ for the ”Game Season”, you can play the first episode immediately then you wait for the release of the rest, or you can wait until February and play the first one free.

How do the episodes work? Do you pay up front and then get the episodes free as they’re released?

For the Mac. I like it because it feels very much like Baldur’s Gate 2. It’s very focused on the party and party-members, unlike Oblivion and Fallout 3 that focus more on exploration.

The Humble Bundle is back: http://www.humblebundle.com/ Pay what you want for cool DRM-free multi-platform indie games. Braid is familiar to the We Talk Games community and I recommend Machinarium: great point-and-click adventure game with a cool ambience.

    Astronut is fun.
I’m addicted to Battleships (single-player Battleship reminiscent of sudoku).
Lego Harry Potter is fun and cute (shuddup!).

    That’s about it!

Thank you for your comments, guys. I’m almost settled for the PS3. The Blu-Ray and a couple of exclusive titles (Little Big Planet, Flower, Katamari Forever and The Last Guardian) sealed the deal.

Unfortunately the Beatles Rock Band Premium Bundle for the PS3 (with Sir Paul’s guitar and the drum kit) is 220€ in Amazon.co.uk, which is a little too much. I guess my planned reenactment of the Apple Corps rooftop concert will have to wait.

Regarding the Wii: I was looking at the Virtual Console titles available in Europe and, as a Mega Drive fan, it made the device very appealing, but at 200€ right now, it can wait.

So, I’m just going to wait for a good Holidays’ deal on the PS3 and on a TV. I guess I need to upgrade from my 14’’ tube television so I can enjoy these next-generation titles.

Until then, I’ll finish all my PS2 titles that I haven’t yet, including that Shadow of the Colossus last boss. That might take awhile.

Welcome to the XXI, Ricardo. Enjoy your stay.

Anyway, I’m ready to buy a modern(ish) gaming console, but I’m lost with all this Move, Touch and Natal business. I just want to, finally, play some Beatles Rock Band, but I have no idea what console I should get for it.

In this atlantic ocean-bathed, economical depression-ridden country of mine, the Playstation 3 is probably the populest of popular gaming consoles out there, with the Wii close behind and the XBox 360 getting the bronze meda, but I have no personal investment on these sort of affairs, I just want something cool to distract my consciousness from the inevitability of death.

Regarding actual games, besides Beatles Rock Band, I don’t really care. A good retro-gaming catalogue would be cool, as well as good support for indie games. This will be pure escapism. Serious, story-driven games I prefer to play on my Mac.

    Let me know your thoughts.

If you’re looking for a retro catalog, the Wii’s downloadable selection beats the other two resoundingly. With that said, I’d consider a PS3 if you don’t already have a Blu Ray player as it serves as the best entertainment bridge of the three consoles currently on the market, and still has some retro games in it’s catalog (if not the impressive collection the Wii boasts).

Wow, that’s actually a really tough question. It’s true, the Wii has it all over the other systems as far as console emulation goes but, Rock Band of the Wii is far less polished than on the other systems. Plus, as the other systems appear to be getting stronger, the Wii is showing it’s technological short comings.

My PS3 get’s far more play than my 360 however, coming into Beatles Rock Band so late after release, you might have trouble finding the instruments at a reasonable price for that system. I stuck with my 360 version of the Rock Band series because I had the Stage Kit (which ended up not working with Beatles anyway).

As far as great downloadable titles, both the PS3 and 360 have great shared and exclusive titles, it’s sort of a wash. If you want to do online titles with a lot of people, go with the 360, if you want to play with fewer folks, PS3. I’ve also had better luck as a network media player with the PS3 although there is a 360 streaming server to share files from your Mac. The PS3 has the Blueray and you can find some inexpensive titles. For online plugged-in ness, I think the 360 has the edge there but, the Sony really does try to make their product ”do it all.”

My final advice would be to see if you can get the Beatles gear for the PS3 at a reasonable price and weigh what type of online experience you want. I’d suggest the Wii as a secondary system for the Virtual Console and first party titles but, wait for a price drop, it’s got to happen.

ah. I rather enjoy the exploring. I sort of ignored my party in Dragon Age, and as a result ended up in a sticky situation where my entire party all used only swords and were usless against archers, and especially shrieks, who have the crazy claws.

Helsing’s Fire was a success with Mrs. Ricardo Melo this summer.

For those of us who are color-impaired and have a hard trouble discerning red from green, I recommend instead The Incident: an indie, retro-styled game full of little gems.
