Video Game Angst: Frustration in gaming

Video games inspire a myriad of emotions. I want to hear the funny stories! Tell me, what is the worst thing you have done when you couldn’t beat a level, board, or boss?

Shadow Complex where there are the red forcefield-esque barriers that deactivate as the enemies go about their patrols. I think I’m going to have to FAQ it…

This isn’t really a story of frustration, but this is the only place to put it, so here it goes. When I was 9, I rented Resident Evil 2 for the PS1. At this point in my life, I didn’t know what a survival horror game was, so when I looked on the back of the box, I was like ”oh, it’s like a third person shooter.” I started playing the first level and there were like 5 zombies coming at me; I couldn’t figure out the controls in time and the zombies got me. Also at this point in my life, I didn’t have the concept of what a zombie was. During the death sequence, I promptly turned off the game system, scarred; that moment scared me enough not to touch another Resident Evil game till Resident Evil 4, or any zombie media for that matter. Funny thing is, I actually like zombie games/movies now; I’ve played every Resident Evil game since. Maybe it’s me trying to prove I’m not scared of them anymore, or maybe they’re the only thing that can get me scared, so it carries a certain appeal; like the reason other people like seeing horror movies is the same reason I like zombie games/movies.

I remember the days when i thoguht it’d be cheaper to buy arcade games on the Xbox360 rather full new games. so i bought N+. And it started off being great fun, until it gradually got harder and harder and harder. But i insisted on completeing it, because it got so addictive. I ended up hating it and began to break pens and pencils, throw things at walls, hit myself and scrape my nails on my skin. I’m usually a calm passive preson, but this damn thing got me so angry. It only saved every 5 levels. So if you died over and over and wanted to come back tomorrow, you’d have to redo the last 4 levels again. And when i finally finished level 250 i was so glad to be done with this thing, and then it ”unlocked” 50 expert levels. I ended up getting stuck forever on level 299 of 300. Then i realised afterwards that you can complete these same single player levels with 3 other people online and still get the ame acheivements.

I remember having a bout of ”Tourettes” while repeatedly getting my ass handed to me by Goro on Mortal Kombat. Feel free to laugh people, I must’ve been the only person on the Planet that couldn’t beat him.

That clay bum would grab you and beat you with his extra arms then, he’d jump on you with an annoying thud sound. I hated both moves.

And then when you FINALLY were able to get past Goro and were feeling good about yourself, Shao Khan would pound your face into the dirt.

As a child I was enchanted by the movie E.T. (bare with me a bit I tend to be long winded it’s coming to games). I absolutely loved the concept of a child alien left behind by his visiting parents and his adventures trying to get home and his friendship with a human boy. Cheesy I know but It was great to me at the time. You could only imagine how happy I was when I stumbled across the cartridge for the atari 2600. At the time you couldn’t have convinced me that I would be disappointed to a degree I had yet to reach in my young life. Anyone who has ever had the misfortune to encounter this game knows how much of a heaping pile of buffalo dung this thing really is. My child self was almost in tears when after an hour of playing, I had no clue what I was doing or if this hunk of plastic was even really a game. However, my young mind would not be swayed and since I picked up the cart at a flea market and there was no instruction book in the box. I just knew if I could get hold of that book it held the secret to the real fun this game contained. After a several years of checking every yard sale and every flea market booth any time my parents would take me I finally struck gold. I found a copy of the game with the book and in my still somewhat young and inexperienced mind I knew that I had to have this. So I paid hard earned money once again without even opening the booklet and took it home. The lesson I learned that day was invaluable. Sometimes a turd is a turd, oh yea….and movie games SUCK

A few years ago – oh, lets say it was 2000 – I was playing Final Fantasy IX in a less than legal way (I didn’t have a PS1 at the time). It was the first Final Fantasy game I’d ever played and miraculously I finished the final boss on the first try.

I was exhilarated. In glee I watched the start of the ending movie until it crashed right on the beginning of it, sending with it the whole saved state of the ROM.

And that, kids, is why piracy doesn’t pay.

So, my brother lives above me in a duplex we rent. I have insomnia. I also can’t stand playing MW2 against those idiots who run around knifing people or dual shotgunning the WHOLE game. I tend to yell at the TV like I do the car in front of me when I am driving… apparently this is not so good at 2am when my brother is trying to sleep (or so he tells me)… no thrown controllers, busted TV’s, just a broken sleep cycle. It’s not much, but it’s all I got.

Broken sleep cycles can cause broken controllers and broken TVs, I believe!

i really hate those kids. I like to play MW2 slowly, take a dander around, explorew the landscape. Approach enemies, shoot them, take another daner. But these stupid kids like to kill me before i’ve even found them.

Super Punch-Out!!, Masked Muscle Bout: Who spits in their opponents eyes in BOXING?! In retrospect, he’s one of my favorite opponents, but at that time more vulgarities came out of my mouth in a single breath than any other moment in my life (ex-girlfriends included.)

I don’t believe that. I heard some of those fights with ex-girlfriends.

Oh said ex-girlfriend wins on shear volume, but vulgarity content? Nowhere close.

One of the most frustrating titles of all time for me (and I realize this will most likely be me having a conversation with myself) has to be Fight For Life for the Atari Jaguar. It wasn’t necessarily even the control (which there was none) or the difficulty of the title that made it frustrating. It was more the years of hype for the title, how it was so much deeper and better than Virtua Fighter, how it would deliver graphics and gameplay as we’ve never seen and then paying the $65 for the biggest piece of crap I’ve ever experienced. That is big time frustration with the human condition.
