For gaming it will be extremely hard for Android phones to compete with iOS 4 (iPhone OS) due to the variety of devices that use Android and the different flavors of Android that there are.
For a developer it’s a big boon knowing that you’re developing for only one (maybe two) devices that run the same OS (iPhone, iTouch) instead of 10 (Nexus One, Dream, Hero, Incredible, Legend, Evo, etc…) and all with variations of Android OS (1.5 Cupcake, 1.6 Donut, 2.1 Éclair or the upcoming 2.2 Froyo… this is real stuff, look it up).
Also lets not forget that is much easier to distribute pirated software on Android devices than on the iOS devices (which require a jailbreak to do so) + there’s this freeware culture on the Google developers and users as well. And in the end, the device that draws the bigger bucks is the one that will charm de game dev houses.

I’d love to get an iPhone if they weren’t tied to Momma Bell and I can’t yet see myself putting down the loot for a Droid. Then again, I still can’t justify even having a data plan at all at this time so, right now I’m just on a voice and text plan.

This is purely my opinion, but hands down, the Droid cannot hold the iPhone’s jock-strap when it comes to gaming. The App Store far out-shines the Droid’s Market for gaming purposes. With that being said, I love my Droid and strictly for utilitarian reasons. It’s made my professional life a lot more streamlined and thus the rest of my life a lot easier. My iPod Touch, gives me all the iPhone gaming experiences I need without the expense of owning an actual iPhone. That’s my two-cents.
